About the Association
1 / 4The World Association of Noonomy (WAN)
The World Association of Noonomy (WAN) was founded in Milan, Italy, on 26 March 2026 and acts in accordance with the Charter. WAN is a non-profit organisation that serves the public interest - it promotes social progress rooted in solidarity and social responsibility.
WAN’s Mission - to bring together researchers from around the world to advance the theory and practice of noonomy and define the principles, pathways, and mechanisms of the nootransition: the movement towards a society where advances in science and technology foster human development, unlock creative potential, and strengthen solidarity.
WAN delivers on this mission through international research collaboration, such as joint projects, congresses, academic forums, publishing, and education. WAN supports a global network of Centres of Noonomy and is building a multilingual Knowledge base of Noonomy researchers worldwide.

Membership
- Members of WAN may include researchers with academic degrees across various fields, students, master’s and doctoral candidates, academic and educational institutions, and any individuals or legal entities aged 18 and above who support the theory of noonomy.

2 / 4The Theory Of Noonomy
The theory of noonomy - or simply noonomy - developed by Professor Sergey Bodrunov, is an interdisciplinary scientific theory of how the global order is evolving, and what may lie beyond the economy. The theory of noonomy provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding the prospects for the development of civilization, revealing the features of a new quality of material production and the associated social progress, and offering objective ways to achieve it.
The theory of noonomy offers a way out of the civilisational crisis: a transition through the New Industrial Society of the Second Generation (NIS.2) to a fundamentally new form of society - the noosociety. The theory defines the principles and mechanisms through which noonomy can emerge as a new system for meeting human needs, one without economic relations between people in material production. Guided by reason, it rejects the manufacture of simulative needs. Knowledge becomes both the primary source and resource of progress, and the standard by which our needs are shaped.

Research Focus

Noonomy is an interdisciplinary theory which holds that an evolutionary transition to a qualitatively new social order is possible only through reason and humanist values. Research into this transition - the nootransition - draws on a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities, cultural studies, economics, political economy, politics, social organisation, engineering, and more.
WAN’s research explores the relationship between changes in production and work and the growing importance of knowledge and technology. It also examines how human needs and culture change, analyses the role of social institutions in the nootransition, and delves into solidarism, multipolarity, and the ecological limits of traditional patterns of consumption. In this society, the biosphere and technosphere form a harmonious whole, creating a human habitat that meets the reasonable needs of both society and the individual.

The theory of noonomy - or simply noonomy - developed by Professor Sergey Bodrunov, is an interdisciplinary scientific theory of how the global order is evolving - and what may lie beyond the economy. The theory of noonomy provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding the prospects for the development of civilization, revealing the features of a new quality of material production and the associated social progress, and offering objective ways to achieve it.
Noo in the word noonomy comes from the Greek noos, that is reason, but not just reason in itself as an abstract notion. The criteria base of reason is truth as the supreme value, to which humanity has always aspired. The second part of the term noonomy, nomos, also has Greek roots and denotes the basic principle of organisation of any space, the universal law of existence of all things.
The term noonomy was coined by Sergey Bodrunov in a 2009 academic publication. In 2018, Noonomy received the World Association for Political Economy’s Distinguished Achievement Award in Political Economy for the Twenty-First Century. It has since been published in 15 countries and 10 languages and is represented in the collections of the largest libraries, such as the Library of Congress of the USA, national libraries of the UK, China, Canada, etc.
Currently, thousands of scientists from various fields of knowledge around the world are engaged in research on noonomy. Many countries annually hold large-scale conferences on these issues. Scientific journals and educational literature are published. Noonomy courses have been integrated into the curricula of leading Russian universities and are taught in China, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Israel, and countries in Africa and Latin America.

The quarterly peer-reviewed journal Noonomy and Noosociety. Almanac of Scientific Works of the S.Y. Witte INID, published in Russian, English, and Chinese, provides a platform for scholarly dialogue and collaboration in the field. WAN supports education through a growing network of Noonomy centres offering both in-person and online courses. The WAN Institute of Noonomy, established by the Association together with the UN Peace Institute UPEACE, unites the scientific and educational activities of WAN under its auspices. WAN is registered in Milan, Italy, and operates worldwide wherever its members are based. As of 1 September 2026, WAN is present in more than 60 countries on every continent.
WAN organises international and regional congresses, conferences, seminars, and other academic events focused on advancing the theory of noonomy and exploring changes in production, work, and social relations. Many are held in partnership with universities, research centres, and other organisations - which broadens the reach of academic dialogue and brings together practical experience from different countries.

Membership is open to both Italian and foreign nationals, as well as to public or private entities, including those without legal personality. Applicants must share WAN’s aims, accept and comply with its statutes and regulations, and have their membership application approved by the WAN Council.
Membership in WAN is free, voluntary, and open-ended.
To become a WAN member, select the Join WAN button, available on every page of the website, and submit an application. During the process, you will be able to review the Personal Data Processing Policy and other required documents. More details in the Join WAN section.
The WAN Council reviews applications within 180 days of receipt and decides whether to approve them. Applicants are notified within 180 days of the decision. If an application is approved, the Council enters the new member in the Register of Members and the member receives a certificate confirming their membership of the Association.
Separate application forms and procedures apply to legal entities and organisations. These are available in the WAN section.
The current annual membership fees are:
- Pupils and students: 0 euro
- Professors and researchers: 100 euro, currently waived until the WAN Council decides otherwise
- All other members: 20 euro, currently waived until the WAN Council decides otherwise
- Legal entities: 500 euro.
Membership fees are paid by bank transfer to the account of the Association’s founding member, the Noonomy Foundation.
WAN membership enables researchers to bring their own work and professional experience into the international discussion on noonomy.
Members receive updates on forthcoming events, new publications, and projects. They can attend Association events, submit work for publication, propose topics for academic discussion, initiate collaborative projects, and connect with colleagues worldwide. Digital materials and printed copies are provided subject to availability and the terms of the relevant publishing project.
Depending on the terms of each event, members may register as attendees, apply to speak, or help organise academic events. The Association may also invite members to contribute to collaborative research, lectures, seminars, and materials for the multilingual Noonomy Knowledge Base.
With their consent, members may have their professional profiles published on the WAN website and linked to relevant publications, events, and sections of the Knowledge Base.
Membership alone does not guarantee that a presentation will be included in an event programme, that a manuscript will be accepted, that a project will receive funding, or that publications will be provided free of charge. Each decision is made through the applicable selection process.
Details of forthcoming events are available in the Events section. Each event page provides the programme, format, working languages, registration deadlines, fees, and submission requirements.
You can participate as an attendee or speaker. Some events may also offer opportunities to serve as a moderator or invited expert, or to join a themed discussion. The roles available depend on the programme of the event.
For open events, you will usually only need to complete a registration form. Prospective speakers must submit a proposed topic, an abstract, and a short biography by the stated deadline. Where submissions are selected on a competitive basis, they are reviewed by the programme or organising committee, and applicants are notified of the decision by email.
Anyone can support WAN by making a voluntary donation, whether or not they are a member.
All donations and membership fees go to the non-profit Noonomy Foundation, which funds the Association. The funds are used solely for WAN’s statutory activities and exclusively in pursuit of solidarity, civic, and social utility purposes.
